Today there are more than 32,000 children living in foster or out-of-home care and this figure is increasing at 9% every year.
There are many reasons why children end up in care; neglect; drugs and alcohol; physical, sexual or psychological abuse or untimely death - but none of them are the child’s fault. They are, however, the child’s burden.
Children living in care often feel isolated and ashamed. Children in care are proven to be more likely to end up with drug and alcohol problems, finish school prematurely, have teen pregnancies or trouble with the juvenile justice system.
These tragedies strike across all states and territories and all groups in society. Children in care are some of Australia’s most disadvantaged citizens and, in a wealthy country like Australia, it is extraordinary to discover that we can’t look after some of our most vulnerable.
However CREATE Foundation offers hope to these kids across Australia. Practical intervention programmes coupled with strong action at the state and federal government levels means that CREATE is in a good position to help change the care system for the better.
Many inspiring stories of strength and triumph come from kids in care, but they need to be more frequent and widespread. CREATE works to improve the care system and help the kids within the system be heard.
We need your contribution to help bridge the gap for children in care. To help CREATE a better life for kids in care click here.
